In June, the vehicle flow on private toll roads dropped 1.9%, comparing to May and considering seasonal adjustments. The reduction is a result of light vehicles traffic, which dropped 2.7%. The heavy vehicles flow increased 2.7%. These data is part of ABCR Activity Index, produced monthly by Brazilian Association of Highway Concessionaires (ABCR) and Tendências Consultoria Integrada.
According to Cláudia Oshiro, an economist at Tendências Consultoria Integrada, the negative variation of the traffic on toll roads caused by light vehicles flow reflects the reduction on comsumption. The light vehicles traffic is related to people income level.
This slowdown is primarily due to the inflation growth, which is a result of food prices, what is shortening the buying power. Oshiro says that the economic activity will drop in 2008 third and fourth quarters. “Besides inflation, the retake of basis interest increase by Brazilian Central Bank may contribute to less productive activity during the next months”, says Cláudia.
In May, the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) Industrial Production Index showed less activity signals and registered a 0.5% reduction of Brazilian industrial production.
Compared to June 2007, the ABCR Index increased 7.1%. The light vehicle traffic increased 6.4% and the heavy vehiche movement grew 8.7%. During the last 12 months the total traffic rose 7.5%. The light vehicle traffic increased 7.9% and the heavy vehicle movement rose 6.8%.
